And on that note...

Here are some excerpts from a press release that went out over the wire late this week:

Bernie Scheffler, frontrunner in the campaign for Fort Worth City Council District 9, today challenged his opponents to fight fair in their quest for city council...

“I want to serve the people of our district with honor and integrity,” said Mr. Scheffler. “I believe that one measure of my propensity to be a credible representative in city government is my deportment during this campaign. I’ve run a clean campaign from the start and will continue to do so. But today I challenge my opponents to do the same.”

Mr. Scheffler offered specific guideless for a clean campaign. He promises to:

Not conduct push polls or other forms of unethical telemarketing

Not purchase Internet domains that contain the names of his opponents

Not steal, destroy or replace yard signs

Not defame his opponents

Not mislead voters on his positions regarding important issues like Urban Gas Drilling

Not accept campaign contributions from special interests such as energy companies

“I consider these guidelines to be part of an unwritten code of ethics which govern community elections,” said Mr. Scheffler. “We’re not running for senate here. We’re running for the right to represent the voice of our neighbors in city government. It’s important that our neighbors come to understand what we truly believe in without being swayed by win-at-any-cost campaign tactics. I hope my opponents will join me in cleaning up this campaign...”

Good luck getting the other candidates to follow the same protocol. If past is prelude, there will be more dirty tricks before the election.
