Joel Burns Controversy

I just wanted to give you all an update on a Joel Burns/Vote Bernie! controversy you may have heard about... if you don't know what I'm talking about you can read about it here or here.

Basically, when Joel heard I was running against Wendy last election, he registered the berniescheffler.com domain name. I knew about this, but came up with the (much cooler, in my opinion) domain iheartfw.com.

However, during this campaign, he directed the berniescheffler.com domain to his own website. After a bit of an out cry the last couple of days, Joel has redirected the berniescheffler.com domain to my website.

I did receive a message from Joel about the change. The complete message follows:

"Bernie,

Sorry about that. I apologize. Best of luck with your campaign.

Joel"

I respect the fact that Joel Burns apologized ... but the damage has been done IMO. The problem is, he only redirected the URL and sent Bernie an email because it was politically required. I don't think he expected the negative feedback (or maybe he thought it would never be discovered) and only did the "right" thing once the negative outweighed the positive. And it's not even about the URL - it's about how this small action fits into a larger pattern - and how that pattern may expand over time. If Joel Burns were to be elected, based on his actions during this short campaign, do you think he would be the kind of person that represents his constituents or the kind that represents his own self interests? I personally feel that his actions throughout this campaign (his actions, not his words mind you) paint the picture of a person who is using this campaign as an opportunity for personal advancement.

Just wanted to comment about this ... I heard about this from a neighbor. I'd already pretty much decided against voting for Joel as originally planned based on other dicey campaign tactics, but this was the final nail in the coffin. And that wasn't much of an apology, was it?!

I'd also like to say thanks very much for your no-call policy. If I didn't know Joel was running for office, I'd be certain he was stalking me. I've received many calls, multiple visits to my door, and direct mail too numerous to count. Annoying? You betcha!

I've decided to vote for the decent guy in this election, and if you're in the runoff, I'll campaign for you too.
